Will the new Citroen C3 models revolutionize the compact car segment?

Citroen has unveiled the new petrol and mild-hybrid versions of the C3, following the release of the electric Citroen e-C3. With a similar design to the e-C3, the new models feature SUV-like styling and are set to hit the European market soon. However, it remains uncertain when they will be available in Australia.

The new petrol and mild-hybrid versions of the Citroen C3 have been unveiled, following the release of the electric e-C3 last year. The design of the new models closely resembles that of the e-C3, with both featuring SUV-like styling. This design aligns the C3 more closely with the separate C3 offered in developing markets.

The new C3 models are now available for orders in Europe, with deliveries expected to begin in the middle of the year. However, there is no confirmation regarding when these models will be available in the Australian market. Peugeot Citroen Australia has stated that updates on product lineups will be shared in due course, while the current C3 model is still available in the market.

The dimensions of the new Citroen C3 have increased compared to its predecessor. It is now 4.01m long, which is 19mm longer, and 100mm taller. The ground clearance has also been raised from 135mm to 197mm.

The new C3 offers a hybrid powertrain called the Hybrid 100. It combines a three-cylinder petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system and a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The petrol engine generates 75kW of power, while the electric motor produces 21kW. This powertrain provides 205Nm of torque, with 55Nm coming from the electric motor.

Citroen claims that the hybrid powertrain offers a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption compared to the petrol version. Additionally, it states that up to 50% of city journeys can be done in electric mode.

The new C3 models come equipped with Citroen’s suspension system featuring progressive hydraulic cushions. This system, seen in other vehicles from the brand, such as the C5 X, promises a better ride quality and improved body control. It utilizes hydraulic cushions for compression and decompression, enhancing the overall comfort of the vehicle.

Inside the new Citroen C3, comfort remains a priority. The seats have been redesigned with Citroen Advanced Comfort technology, providing additional foam for a more supportive and enveloping experience. The minimalist dashboard features a fabric-wrapped section inspired by sofas, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system available. Instead of a traditional instrument cluster, Citroen has introduced a head-up display on a glossy black surface, projecting key information.

Safety features in the new C3 include LED headlights and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Additionally, it offers optional features like satellite navigation, climate control, wireless smartphone mirroring, a wireless phone charger, and rain-sensing wipers.

In terms of sales, the Citroen C3 faced a decline in Australia, with only 69 hatchbacks sold in 2023. This represents a 10.4% decrease compared to the previous year. While it was outsold by the Skoda Fabia and Audi A1, the C3 managed to edge out the C5 X as Citroen’s best-selling model by a single unit.
