GWM Unveils Mid-Life Update for Haval H6, but Australia Misses Out

Will the Haval Xiaolong Max revolutionize the SUV market with its plug-in hybrid power and cutting-edge features?

GWM has introduced a refreshed version of its Haval H6 SUV in China, but unfortunately, it won’t be making its way to Australia. Instead, the current H6 will be replaced in late 2024 or early 2025 by the Haval Xiaolong Max, a new global SUV offering plug-in hybrid power.

The refreshed Haval H6 in China showcases a new front design featuring vertical LED daytime running lights and a grille styled with metal-look rectangle trim pieces. Although the headlights remain largely unchanged, the overall look is reminiscent of the Hyundai Palisade. Moving to the rear, the full-width LED light bar of the current model has been replaced with two separate tail light clusters, giving it a more conventional appearance.

While official interior photos have not been released yet, leaked images suggest that the Haval H6 will sport a larger infotainment touchscreen. This update aims to enhance the overall user experience and keep up with the competition in terms of technology and connectivity.

The Haval H6 was once a popular choice among Chinese car buyers, consistently ranking among the top five best-selling vehicles. However, its popularity has waned over the years, dropping to ninth place in 2022 and falling out of the top 10 entirely in 2023. To give the model a boost before its anticipated replacement, GWM has introduced this mid-life update to keep it relevant in the market.

Replacing the Haval H6 in Australia will be the Haval Xiaolong Max, a plug-in hybrid SUV set to arrive in late 2024 or early 2025. This next-generation SUV was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2023 and is positioned as a strategic model for the brand’s global markets. With its plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Xiaolong Max offers an impressive blend of performance and efficiency.

The Xiaolong Max features a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle engine, combined with two electric motors and a hybrid transmission, delivering a total system output of 205kW and 585Nm. It is equipped with an advanced battery and can travel up to 83km in pure electric mode. Additionally, it offers a range of driving modes that adapt to different road conditions, enhancing both performance and fuel economy.

Inside the Xiaolong Max, drivers can expect a high-tech and luxurious cabin. It features a digital instrument cluster, an infotainment touchscreen, and a separate touchscreen dedicated to the passenger. The SUV also offers a head-up display, panoramic sunroof, surround-view camera system, and semi-autonomous parking assist. Safety features include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic alert, and traffic jam assist.

As for the future of the petrol-powered Haval H6 in Australia, it remains uncertain. With the Xiaolong Max being a plug-in hybrid-only model, it is unclear what GWM has in store for non-hybrid SUV enthusiasts. However, there have been sightings of the mid-sized Haval Second-Generation Big Dog, indicating that it may fill the gap left by the petrol-powered H6.
