Australian New Car Sales Reach Record High, Setting New Year-to-Date Sales Result

Considering the dominance of SUVs and the increasing popularity of hybrid options, will we see a shift in the automotive market towards more environmentally-friendly vehicles in the near future?

The Australian new car sales market is booming, with April figures smashing records and achieving the highest year-to-date sales result ever. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reports that sales in April reached 97,202 vehicles, contributing to a total of 401,654 units sold so far this year. This represents a significant increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The Australian market is showing a strong preference for SUVs and light commercial vehicles, a trend that has been observed throughout the first quarter of 2024.

SUVs continue to dominate the market, accounting for 55.7% of total new vehicle sales in April. Meanwhile, light commercial vehicles claimed 22.0% of sales, and passenger cars made up 17.8%.

When it comes to brand popularity, Toyota is still leading the pack. In April, Toyota sold 20,711 units, far ahead of Ford in second place with 8,648 units. Mazda, Kia, and Mitsubishi rounded out the top five.

The Toyota RAV4 had an impressive performance, taking the top spot as Australia’s best-selling vehicle in April with 5,857 units sold. It surpassed the Ford Ranger, the previous winner, which sold 5,569 units. Toyota’s HiLux, the Ford Everest, and the Isuzu D-Max also made it to the top five.

There is a noticeable increase in the sales of hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. These new energy options captured 18.3% of the market in April, a significant jump from just 7.5% the previous year. However, battery electric vehicle sales did not fare as well, experiencing a 7.9% decrease and only accounting for a 6.4% market share.

The positive sales momentum is not limited to a specific region. FCAI data shows that sales have increased across all Australian states and territories compared to April 2023. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) saw a 14.5% increase, New South Wales (NSW) experienced a 16.9% increase, and the Northern Territory had a 12.9% increase. Queensland (QLD), South Australia (SA), Tasmania (TAS), Victoria (VIC), and Western Australia (WA) also saw significant sales growth.

Overall, the impressive sales figures in April reflect strong consumer confidence in purchasing new vehicles. Despite the challenging economic landscape, consumers are making choices that drive the industry forward.
